Bonfires will be blazing on the approach to Westport tonight, as the town’s new Senior Minister makes his way back home.
Michael Ring was appointed Minister for Rural Affairs in Taoiseach Leo Varadker’s new Cabinet yesterday evening.
He was first elected to Dail Eireann in the 1994 by-election, and has been subsequently re-elected in each general election since then.
From 2011 to 2016 he served as Minister of State for Tourism & Sport, and since last year he was Junior Minister for Regional Economic Development.
He has now been appointed a senior Minister – and travelled with other Cabinet members to Aras an Uachtarain last night to receive their seals of office from President Michael D Higgins and hold their first Cabinet meeting.
No Dáil business is being conducted today to allow Ministers visit their departments and read into their briefs before the next sitting next Tuesday.
A welcome home party is being planned for Minister Michael Ring at the Castlecourt Hotel in Westport, when he arrives back at about 9pm tonight.
