Minister Leo Varadkar and Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald have announced today that they will increase the allowance paid to those living in direct provision.
In Ballyhaunis, up to 200 adults and children are living in the direct provision centre at the Old Convent.
The rate of allowance for children in direct provisionrises from € 15.60 to € 21.60 per week, and for adults from € 19.10 to € 21.60 per week.
Increases will start from the beginning of August, and will also be paid to those on the Irish Refugee Protection Programme.
Currently, the allowance is paid to over 3000 adults and almost 1200 dependent children across the country.
Minister Varadker also says the Government is reviewing options that will allow asylum seekers to work in certain circumstances, and they expect to make a decision on that later this year.
