NBRU calls on rural politicians to intervene in threat to Expressway services

The National Bus & Rail Drivers Union is calling on politicians in rural Ireland to intervene in the threat to Bus Eireann’s Expressway service.

Consultants Grant Thornton have advised Bus Eireann to axe its Expressway service completely.

The report, seen by the Irish Independent ,says getting rid of the service - which links major towns and cities around the country - would be the 'most viable option' financially.

The consultants warn that Bus Éireann would face insolvency within two years if nothing is done to address losses.

The company has faced significant losses in recent times , particularly as a result of growing competition from private bus operators. Grant Thornton was commissioned several months ago to review survival plan options drawn up by company management, and has now recommended cutting the Expressway service completely.
