A garda investigation is underway into allegations of fraud voting in a Sligo electoral area last May, following a complaint by Fine Gael General Secretary Tom Curran.

Independent cllr Declan Bree told a meeting of Sligo county council yesterday that there were 252 postal votes registered for the Ballymote-Tubbercurry area, compared to just 20 in Sligo-Strandhill and 17 in Sligo-Drumcliffe.

The cllr said “you don’t need to be a genius to realize that there is something fundamentally wrong when you examine the number of postal voters claiming to have a physical disability in one municipal district.”

According to today’s Irish Independent, it has been alleged that the list of postal voters in Ballymote-Tubbercurry included people in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Britian and Europe.
