Ahead of this afternoon’s visit by the Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People, Jim Daly to Belmullet District hospital, Sinn Féin Senator Rose Conway-Walsh has said it is time for truth and transparency around the future of the facility.

She told Midwest News today that a Community Action committee for the hospital’s future is asking people from Erris to gather on the route up to Belmullet District Hospital from 3.30pm this afternoon to greet the Minister, due at 4pm, and to demonstrate to him that there is a real need to protect and invest in the hospital.

The Senator claims two conflicting reports on the facility’s future have emerged recently.  Fine Gael politicians, she says, insist that Belmullet Hospital will not be downgraded, while the HSE are saying five out of the 20 surviving beds will be closed, contract staff will be redeployed and agency staff will be let go.
