Mayo County Council needs to ensure that part of the Operational Fund from the Owenniny Windfarm should be ring fenced for use by the immediate community in the Eskeragh and surrounding area,  that’s according to Fine Gael Local Election candidate for the Ballina area, Kieran Gill.

Mr Gill says the community is very disappointed to date that no special recognition is being afforded them in the criteria for the distribution of the fund which will be in excess of 200,000 euro per annum when the windfarm is up and running.

They are looking for part of the fund to be ringfenced for the benefit of the households living within a 6-7km radius of the windfarm. They want the funds to be spent on community projects but also to benefit individual household providing discounted electricity, retrofitting of houses and educational bursaries to cover apprenticeships and upskilling of the occupants.
