Extensive gorse fires raged across Dooyork in Erris over the weekend and were only eventually brought under control yesterday evening.

Many people were frightened, as the blaze threatened homes, according to local Fine Gael councillor Gerry Coyle.

Speaking to Midwest News this morning councillor Coyle complimented the response by the local community assisting the fire services in getting the blaze under control.

He urged people to be extremely careful in the present dry conditions not to heedlessly throw away a cigarette in the bog, or spread hot ashes along a ditch near their homes.
