Despite all the warnings – the number of motorists fined for using a mobile phone while driving  is up 24 percent in the first three months of this year compared to last year.

And as we come into another Bank Holiday weekend, gardai are advising road users that the garda presence on the roads across the region will be greater than ever, with additional checkpoints both day and night time.

Motorists are advised that inappropriate speed, driving with a mobile phone in use, drink driving or failing to wear a seatbelt are all motoring offenses.

Regional Roads Superintendent of the Western region Noel Kelly told Midwest News that many motorists are failing to get the message with the number of drivers fined for using a mobile phone up almost 25 percent compared to 2018.
