Work has started this week on a pedestrian crossing and traffic calming measures on the Newport Road in Westport, which will benefit children attending the Holy Trinity and Scoil Phadraig National Schools.

Westport-based Fianna Fail Councillor Brendan Mulroy says he has campaigned for a number of years for works at this location to improve safety for children being dropped off and collected in the mornings and afternoon.

He told Midwest News that work has now started on the safety improvements.
