A proposal for a second air ambulance is ready to be approved by the Minister for Health.
That's according to Roscommon-Galway TD Denis Naughten, who says this would take pressure off the air ambulance based in Athlone.
The Independent TD says a second air ambulance based at Cork Airport would allow the Athlone-based service to respond to more emergencies in the West and Midlands.
The air ambulance was launched in 2012 and has saved countless lives across the country.
Deputy Naughten says that, with a second air ambulance coming on stream, the dedicated team from the Air Corps and National Ambulance Service in Athlone will be in a position to respond to more emergencies across this region, for people who have to travel well over an hour by road to access a major trauma unit.
