Cancer Care West's new Mayo Cancer Bus made its inaugural journey today.

The new service will bring people from Mayo who are receiving cancer treatment in Galway to the University Hospital Galway from Belmullet, passing through a number of Mayo towns en route to the hospital on Mondays.

The bus will bring the patients home on Fridays, after undergoing radiotherapy treatment.

Mayo-based Minister Michael Ring, who allocated €100,000 to Cancer Care West last October for the purchase of the new bus, says it will make a massive difference in the lives of many Mayo people who are battling cancer.

Every week, cancer patients from across Co Mayo travel to and from UHG for radiotherapy and stay in the Cancer Care West residential facility.

Many of the patients are elderly or may not be able to drive themselves, so the new bus service got underway today.

A fundraising campaign is underway to help pay for the cost of the service.
