A nationwide status yellow snow- ice warning has been extended until Sunday.
Met Eireann now says the weather will continue to be very cold until Sunday with severe frost at night and ice on untreated surfaces.
Treacherous weather conditions are expected in parts of the country over the next few hours, with temperatures falling to as low as minus six degrees tonight in places, and minus 4 across Connacht.
Among the lowest temperatures recorded at 6am this morning were minus 4 degrees at Mount Dillon in Roscommon and minus 2.7 in Gurteen.
Heavy snow showers today have caused some difficulties for motorists, while the snow caused some delays and diversions at Ireland West Airport Knock.
Met Eireann says today will see the heaviest snowfall, while drier weather is on the way for tomorrow and Saturday, but remaining very cold with severe frost at night.
Motorists are urged to be vigilant and adjust their driving to the conditions on the road.
