The current pay model in place for the majority of school secretaries means they're being treated like second-class employees by the Government.

That's according to the Fórsa trade union, which has today launched a campaign seeking fairer treatment for school secretaries.

The campaign has the backing of the primary school teacher's union the INTO, and is calling for school secretaries to be provided with the same basic entitlements as clerical staff on public service pay scales.

Joe O'Connor of the Forsa trade union told Midwest News that the vast majority of school secretaries are paid through an individual school's ancillary grant, with no entitlement to sick pay or pension rights - despite playing a vital role in schools......
