A serious assault occurred on a teenager in a county Mayo town over the Christmas period, and despite the incident having occurred directly under a public CCTV camera in the town, the camera was out of order. The camera had been reported as out of order weeks previously, but the Departments of Justice and the Environment were arguing between themselves as to who should pay for the call out, according to Westport based Independent Councillor Christy Hyland.

He raised the matter at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council earlier this week, as he says that this matter needs to be urgently sorted – as to who is responsible for the maintenance / repair of cameras.

Cllr Hyland says the local authority has a responsibility her as in any community application for a CCTV system the applicant must have the support of Mayo County Council.
