As new plans are underway to strategically link Castlebar to Westport in an effort to develop a new regional growth centre , a Castlebar councillor has expressed his view that the bypassing of Castlebar with the construction of a new dual carriageway on the N5 between Turlough and Westport will be to the detriment of many businesses in Castlebar.

Fianna Fail councillor Al McDonnell outlined his concerns about the road development at yesterday’s monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District

He said y he believes that the dual carriageway  bypass of Castlebar that will run from Turlough to Westport will work to the detriment of Castlebar, stating that the new road will at its closest – be two miles from Castlebar town centre. Many business people, he said have expressed concerns to him about the potential impact on Castlebar businesses. He also believes that Castlebar and Westport have two very different identities and wont merge easily to form a hub
