A Castlebar man has been awarded an OBE in the UK's New Year's Honours List.

Professor Brian Dolan, originally from Riverdale Court in Castlebar, was awarded the honour for services to nursing and emergency care.

He's one of 238 people being honoured with an OBE - Order of the British Empire.

Professor Dolan, who trained as a psychiatric nurse in St Mary's Hospital, Castlebar over 30 years ago, is visiting professor of nursing to Oxford Institute of Nursing & Midwifery and he and his wife Lynda are founding directors of Health Service 360, a consultancy company based in Stratford-Upon -Avon.

Brian is also spearheading a global social movement called #endpjparalysis, recently adopted at Mayo University Hospital, which encourages patients in hospitals to get up and dressed and move about while in hospital.

Speaking to Midwest News today Brian said he is delighted and humbled with the honour and said he was taken aback and thrilled when he received the news on Friday last.
