After almost two centuries Ballycroy Post Office is to close this evening at 5.30pm.

The future of the Ballycroy Post Office remained in doubt after An Post had to re-advertise the contract to provide post office services for the region, after there were no successful applicants.

The news was confirmed to Midwest this afternoon  by Gerry Loftus of Save Rural Ireland Mayo.

The future of the post office in Ballycroy looked to have been secured when An Post announced in September they had agreed to re-advertise the contract, but fresh fears arose in recent weeks when there were no successful applicants for the post.

The Postmistress Rose Conway has today paid tribute to all their staff and customers over the years.
