A motorcyclist  was detected yesterday travelling 198 km/h on the N5, at Drummindoo, Westport – as gardai crackdown on speed across the country this Christmas and New Year.

As part of the Road Safety campaign more than 100,000 vehicles were monitored by safety cameras yesterday and just under 500 vehicles nationally were detected driving in excess of the speed limit.

A motorist in the R446 IN Ballinasloe was caught travelling at 116km/h in an 80 km zone.

The gardai say they wish to thank the vast majority of drivers who drive responsibly on the roads, however, there remains many who do not.

Speeding they say is a major factor in fatal road collisions and are appealing to road users to slow down and save lives.
