Pensions for local authority workers should be funded by central Government, rather than by local councils  - that's the view of Castlebar-based Sinn Fein Councillor Joe McHale.

It emerged at Mayo County Council's Budget meeting this week that pensions are costing Mayo County Council €6.5 million this year, rising to €7 million in 2019, with some 500 people currently in receipt of pensions from the Mayo authority.

Councillor Joe McHale says pensions contributions for new entrants to the local authority are now being funded by central Government and he believes legislation should be introduced to ensure the pensions currently being funded by local authorities would come from central funding also.
