A Fine Gael Senator has raised concerns with the Junior Health Minister about the delay in considering the need for a fixed Cath Lab at Sligo University Hospital.
Senator Frank Feighan says he understands that a business case for a fixed Cath Lab has been submitted nationally but it looks like this will not be advanced until the National Review of Cardiac Services is completed.
Minister McGrath has informed Senator Feighan that the review will not be completed until June 2019 and while the Senator has acknowledged the value of that review, he says he is concerned about the delay in considering a fixed Cath Lab for Sligo.
Senator Feighan says the need for a permanent Cath Lab in Sligo is compelling, with the crucial 90-minute window in the event of somebody having a heart attack. He says for those living in Sligo and the North-West, this poses a major challenge with poor road infrastructure and lack of access to life-saving cardiac services.
