The sod will be turned this afternoon at 2.30pm in Coolaney county Sligo for a new National Mountain Bike Centre.

809,000 euro in funding for the new development has been secured from the Department of Rural and Community Development , and Minister Michael Ring will attend this afternoon’s occasion to mark the start of work on a project that is expected to be worth more than a million euro annually to the local economy.

The local community have been working closely with Sligo County Council to develop the idea, and it is expected to attract up to 50,000 cyclists annually. It’s expected that the facility will be open to  the public from next Summer (2019).

Local Fine Gael councillor Dara Mulvey told Midwest News today that the new facility is all part of the plans to expand the tourism attractions in the Sligo and North West region.
