The number of people in Mayo who have availed of the Senior Alert Scheme has more than doubled in the past year.

As of the end of October, 1441 people in Mayo were registered on the scheme, compared to 675 participants at the same stage last year.

The Senior Alert Scheme provides older people with a free monitored alarm which they wear on their person and can activate if they need assistance.

The alarms and first year of monitoring are free, while from the second year on, a modest yearly fee is charged.

The scheme is funded by Minister Michael Ring's department, and he says there's been a 112% increase in applications nationally.

Minister Ring is urging more people to avail of the seniors alert scheme, and further details are available on or by calling 01 - 511 7222.
