A roundabout needs to be put in place on the N5 outside Swinford at the junction with the N26 - that's according to Swinford-based Fianna Fail Councillor Michael Smyth who's concerned about the increased number of collisions at this junction, known locally as Corrib Oil.

He believes a roundabout would increase safety at this location, and would slow down heavy goods vehicles on their approach to Swinford.

Councillor Smyth is to put down a notice of motion for the next council meeting, calling for a full review of the N5 at this junction, and intends to start a campaign in favour of a roundabout.

He also says he will stage a protest on the N5 in the New Year to highlight the danger for motorists at this location.
