The Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces was back in his hometown of Castlebar last evening to speak at the PDFORRA annual conference.
Vice Admiral Mark Mellet said that, while the military is facing "challenges", he does not accept there is a crisis in the Defence Forces.
He said resolving the issue of pay for soldiers, sailors and air corps personnel is his top priority.
Yesterday, PDFORRA claimed hundreds of defence force personnel are buying their way out of the service each year, due to the poor pay and conditions.
Vice Admiral Mellet acknowledged that Defence Forces personnel are the lowest paid in the public service and said he has already made a written case to the Public Service Pay Commission but he also wants to make a verbal submission.
