The Mayo Fire Service is calling on householders across the county to ensure they have smoke alarms fitted in their homes, and to check them regularly to ensure they're working.

This is National Fire Safety Week, and the theme this year is "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives".

The Fire Service is urging householders to check smoke alarms weekly, be on alert for obvious dangers such as overloaded sockets or candles, and to plan an escape route in the event of a fire.

As part of National Fire Safety Week, open days are being held at Belmullet Fire Station tomorrow, Ballina Fire Station on Thursday and Castlebar Fire Station on Friday where Fire Officers will be available to offer advice in relation to fire safety in the home.
