Mayo County Council should prioritise funding for the Ballina Military Barracks site as a project under the government’s new Urban Regeneration Development Fund, according to local Fine Gael councillor Jarleth Munnelly.
The €1 billion fund, which is administered by the Department of Housing, Planning & Local Government, is a central plank of the governments Ireland 2040 development strategy.
Cllr. Munnelly believes the fund is a perfect match for a project such as the Military Barracks in the centre of Ballina town.
Earlier this year, Mayo County council supported a proposal from the councillor to create a regeneration strategy for Ballina town.
A central part of that, he says, has to be the regeneration of the site around the Military Barracks in the heart of the town.
He will be raising the matter at this week’s monthly meeting of Balllina Municipal District on Wednesday.
Speaking to Midwest News today he said a the fund has great potential for towns like Ballina.
