Galway East Independent deputy Seán Canney says it’s a very welcome move by Minister Denis Naughten to make €700,000 available to remove stock piles of tyres from farms.
The collection point for tyres in this region is Athenry Mart, Co. Galway and the date for collection is Saturday the 13th of October.
The tyres will be collected by the Irish Farm Film Producers Group and they have agreed to the removal of tyres from farms through four Bring Centre collection points. Farmers must bring their herd numbers to these collection centres for verification purposes.
Deputy Canney is encouraging all farmers who have stock piles of tyres to bring them to Athenry and they will be disposed of. The cost to the farmer under this heavily subsidised scheme is 15 euro per tonne, for the first 3 tonne and after that the market price of 160 euro per tonne applies.
The vast majority of tyres collected will be recycled in Ireland which will support Irish jobs’
