Reports suggest that the carbon tax may be increased by 50 percent in next month's budget.

The Sunday Times says that Finance Minister, Pascal Donohoe, is considering the move.

If introduced, it would add approximately 2 euro to the cost of filling a car with petrol or diesel and 1 euro 20 to the cost of a bag of coal.

The decision would be in line with recommendations from the Climate Change Advisory Council to increase carbon tax from 20 to 30 euro per tonne.
