The extensive excavation of a site without any planning permission and the parking of caravans on it at Cloonkeen, along the main Castlebar to Westport road was condemned by councillors at yesterday’s monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.
A delegation of local residents attended the meeting in an effort to get action on a development that is underway now for some months and is causing widespread concern and dismay in a residential area.
Local Fianna Fail councillor Al McDonnell raised the matter at yesterday’s meeting and all councillors agreed that immediate action is needed and called on Mayo county council executive to deal with it swiftly.
Director of Services John McHale told the meeting that the authority has initiated legal proceedings in this case and because of that, he said, he could not comment any further on it at this time.
Councillors called on the authority to immediately serve an injunction on the owner of the site to stop the unauthorised excavation and they agreed that they would meet again in 10 days time in a special sitting to ensure that the authority was acting to prevent this development continuing.
