Just three presidential hopefuls made it to Carrick on Shannon this afternoon to address councillors in the race for the Aras.

Sean Gallagher, Peter Casey and Sarah Jane Mulligan are hoping to secure the support of Leitrim County Council, as the contest to rival Michael D Higgins in the presidential race heats up.

Meanwhile, businessman Gavin Duffy has become the first Presidential candidate to win the support of a local authority.

Meath County Council has become the first to decide which candidate it'll support ahead of October's election.

17 councillors voted for Gavin Duffy to get their nomination - he was followed by Sean Gallagher with 7 votes and senator Joan Freeman on 2.

He still needs another 3 local authorities or 20 members of the Oireachtas to get on the ballot paper.

For the rest of the candidates, the hunt for a nomination continues with a number of county councils due to hear from prospective candidates this evening.

Roscommon County Council will hold a special meeting on Wednesday afternoon to hear from potential candidates, while no such meeting is planned to date for Mayo County Council.
