It’s ridiculous to prevent county councillors from discussing any planning decisions at meetings of the local authority, according to a retired county councillor, Claremorris based Sean Fitzpatrick.
Mr Fitzpatrick was responding to the directive given by the Planning Minister Eoghan Murphy some months ago, preventing any discussion on planning at local authority meetings.
In Mayo, the practice had been to discuss planning decisions that looked likely to be refused at Municipal District meetings. But the planning item has now been taken off the agenda.
Elected members of Mayo county council have expressed their outrage at the move and are seeking legal opinion on restoring planning to municipal district meeting agendas.
Speaking to Midwest News Sean Fitzpatrick said that the 1966 City and County Management Act which gives councillors their power to discuss planning issues, cannot be overruled just because the Minister decides to implement a directive.
