Castlebar Sinn Fein councillor Joe McHale last week called on Bus Eireann to review their new service and restore the 456 Bus route that had, for almost a century, served people living along the main route between Ballina and Castlebar.

That service, between Foxford and Castlebar, has been replaced with new express routes, that no longer stop along the road in places like Cloongee, or Straide, and Turlough.

Foxford based councillor Neil Cruise has added his voice to the plea to Bus Eireann, and has written to the company asking it to restore the 456 Route, at least three times a day in both directions in light of the many people who have been negatively impacted by the new express route only.

The Fine Gael councillor told Midwest News today that the new service does not make sense, as many of the bus users have no way of getting to Foxford or Ballyvary to get a bus.

He said at a time when the country is trying to reduce the use of vehicles on our roads, Bus Eireann is forcing bus users to get a car on the road to get to a bus stop.

Midwest News asked Bus Eireann last week for a comment on this new service, and we are still awaiting a reply.
