Yesterday Minister Katherine Zappone revealed that significant irregularities in the birth registration process by St Patrick's Guild had been discovered by Tusla after they received files from the former adoption society. It came to light that 126 people placed by the agency from 1946 to 1969 had incorrect or false information on their birth certs. Whilst discussing the fallout from the revelations on the show this morning, Tommy Marren received a phone call from Mary, who told us of her own story and issues with St Patrick's Guild.

After her mother was reported by someone in Letterkenny for being pregnant she was sent to a Mother & Baby Home in Dublin. One day, shortly after Mary's first birthday, her mother arrived home to discover Mary was no longer there - she had been taken and placed with a family who were told that Mary's real mother could not cope. At the age of five Mary discovered she was adopted and for years she attempted to discover the identity of her real parents, but ran into a brick wall for decades because of the obfuscation of St Patrick's Guild. Eventually Mary would find out that her birth cert had been falsified, learning in the process the truth about her birth parents, her real date of birth, and her given birth name - Joan. Listen back to the remarkable and heart-rending story now.
