Parents in the Claremorris area are to be surveyed on whether there's demand in the area for multi-denominational and non-denominational schools.

The Minister for Education Richard Bruton has announced that surveys are currently being carried out of parents of pre-school children in 16 areas across the country, including Claremorris,  as it's recognised that more diversity is needed to meet the changing needs of Ireland's population.

Each of the 16 Education & Training Boards across the country have selected an initial pilot area in which to survey parents of pre-school children.

The Mayo/Sligo/Leitrim ETB  has chosen Claremorris for its survey, whiole the Galway & Roscommon Education & Training Board is carrying out a survey in Athenry.

The surveys will be carried out by the local County Childcare Committees.

The result of the surveys will feed into discussions with Catholic bishops about handing over patronage of some schools to meet any demand for change.

At the moment 90 per cent of primary schools are Catholic-controlled.
