Two Mayo butcher shops secured international distinction in the 2017 European Butcher Championship Awards held in France.

Sean Bourke and Sarah Ní Shúilleabháin of De Búrca Traditional Butcher Shop Castlebar and  John and Marion Shannon of John Shannon Meats in Kiltimagh were all presented with their awards at a special ceremony yesterday evening at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar.

These two Mayo butchers won in the sausage and white pudding categories in the prestigious French awards last November.

14 French adjudicators and dignitaries, all involved in quality food production and dressed in traditional attire visited the county town, to honour both businesses.

The Mayor of Castlebar, Martin McLoughlin and other elected councillors welcomed the French visitors to Castlebar yesterday and afterwards Barry Ralph in House of Plates prepared a Mayo-themed tasting menu for the group and the presentation of the Cups followed in The Bridge Street Bar, Castlebar.

Annie Beresfard was one of the visiting adjudicators and she told Midwest Radio News that they were delighted to recognize the significance of the Mayo wins by travelling to the county to make the presentations.
