The Honorary Freedom of Co Roscommon will be accorded to Ballaghadereen native Brian O’Doherty next Thursday.
The New-York based internationally-acclaimed writer, artist and art critic will celebrate his 90th birthday next month.
The decision to award him the Freedom of Roscommon was made at a meeting of Roscommon County Council in January.
Mr O’Doherty is more widely known in this country as Patrick Ireland – but he buried that name in 2008 following the peace process, and resumed his birth name.
He will be accorded with the Freedom of Roscommon at a ceremony at the Irish Museum of Modern Art at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin next Thursday and his new exhibition entitled “Language and Space” will be officially opened at the museum that afternoon.
