A new initiative, encouraging staff and parents not to smoke near the school, will be launched tomorrow at The Quay National School in Ballina.

“Smoke-Free School Gates” is part of the Healthy Ireland Mayo project, supported by Mayo County Council, and will see signs being erected, which were designed by 6th class pupils in the school, indicating that smoking is not permitted at or near the school gates.

The idea is to reduce the amount of smoke or second-hand smoke being inhaled by young students, and similar initiatives are already in place at a number of schools across northern Ireland and the UK.
