It’s reported today that an application for EU funding for transport projects in the West & Northwest were dropped following the intervention of Leo Varadker when he was Minister for Transport.
The Irish Times reports that projects such as the Western Rail Corridor and the upgrading of Galway and Sligo airports were dropped from an EU transport prorgramme in 2011 at the behest of Mr Varadker.
The decision was made as the government then was concerned it would not be able to supply the matching funding required for the projects due to financial pressures.
The current Government, which includes a number of Independent Alliance TDs from the West, is now seeking to remove the exclusion of western projects from the European Commission’s Ten-T programme.
However, documents obtained under freedom of information show this has been stalled by a need to assess the implications of Brexit.
