The HSE West has confirmed that the second orthopaedic unit at Merlin Park Hospital in Galway will not be reopening.
Two theatres were closed at the hospital last September due to structural problems.
One theatre has been refurbished and reopened for surgery last week, but the second theatre will not be reopening.
Plans are in place for a modular theatre at Merlin Park, which is scheduled to open next October, but planning permission has not yet been sought for this structure.
Headford-based Fianna Fail Councillor Mary Hoade requested an update on the issue at yesterday’s meeting of the HSE Regional Forum.
Management said a design team is in place for the modular theatre, and they hope to apply for planning permission before the next HSE Forum meeting.
Councillor Hoade has welcomed last week’s reopening of one orthopaedic theatre at Merlin Park, but is concerned about the timeframe for delivering the modular theatre.
