Pope Francis has confirmed he will visit Ireland in August.

The Pope will attend the World Meeting of Families which takes place from 21-26 August at Croke Park in Dublin.

The 81-year old pontiff will arrive in Dublin on Saturday 25th August and will celebrate Mass in the Phoenix Park on Sunday 26th August, bringing the World Meeting of Families to a close.

The Catholic Communications Office says full details of the papal schedule will be released at a later date.

However, there is no indication at this point that Pope Francis may include a visit to Knock Shrine on his itinerary.
