A hospital worker helped foil a robbery in a Castlebar petrol station when he tackled the thief to the ground and held him down until gardaí arrived.
29-year-old Joe Moran stopped into the Corrib Oil store in Castlebar just before 8pm on Wednesday evening last, before starting his shift as a porter at Mayo University Hospital.
Mr Moran heard the cashier shout and he ran to the counter to see what had happened.
According to the website, thejournal.ie Mr Moran saw the robber take a handful of cash and run from behind the till towards the door.
He tackled him to the ground at the door and the robber appeared to have a large sum of money in his hand.
The guards arrived at the scene a few minutes later and arrested the culprit.
No one was reported to have sustained any injuries in the incident.
Mr Moran has described his actions as “spur of the moment” and said had never done anything like that before, though he has worked in security in the past.
Gardai confirmed to the website that they attended the incident on Wednesday and said a man in his late twenties was “apprehended by staff and members of the public”. He was arrested and taken to Castlebar garda station.
