Plans are being finalised for a festival in Louisburg over the June Bank Holiday Weekend, to mark the town’s twinning with a town in Nova Scotia, also called Louisbourg.

The Canadian Ambassador to Ireland Kevin Vickers is expected to attend the events in the west Mayo town in June, and a dance will be held this Saturday night in the Derrylahan to raise funds for the festival.

Rosarie Tiernan, secretary of Louisburg Community Futures, also made a presentation to councillors at this week’s meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District to seek funding towards the town twinning celebrations.

Councillor Teresa Maguire formally proposed the twinning of the two towns, and her motion received cross-party support.
