Icy conditions, snow and unseasonably cold weather are forecast for the rest of the week.

Met Eireann has issued a yellow weather warning for the whole country for low temperatures, while a status orange snow &ice warning is in place for parts of the East, Southeast and Midlands.

While the West is expected to escape the worst of the snow, temperatures tonight will plummet to as low as minus  5 in Connacht.

In light of the severe weather being forecast, ESB Networks have decided to cancel planned outages that were due to take pklace this week , in order to carry out repairs and maintenance.

Earlier today, Westport Councillor Christy Hyland had appealed to the ESB to call off the planned outages, amid fears that homes would be left without heat.

This evening, ESB Networks has confirmed that planned outages have been cancelled this Wednesday, Thursday & Friday and will be rescheduled for a later date.

The Mayo-based Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring is reminding people of the need to look out for older and more vulnerable members of their community during the cold snap this week.

He says it’s important to check if elderly people in particular have enough food, fuel and medication.
