The sudden death has occurred of a former Mayor of Castlebar, businessman Brendan Heneghan. He died last night, aged 53.
One of the county town's best known personalities, he became ill at his home in Snugboro on Sunday night and passed away early this morning at Mayo University Hospital.
His death has shocked and saddened the entire community.
He is survived by his wife Patricia, sons Tom, Colm and John, mother Carmel, relatives and friends.
A member of the local Fine Gael party, he served on Castlebar Town Council from 2003 to 2014, and during that time was the Mayor of Castlebar for two terms.
Paying tribute to him today, close friend, neighbour and former Castlebar Town Council colleague, Ger Deere told Midwest News that the Brendan was an outstanding family man who loved everything about Castlebar and its people. He described him as “Mr Castlebar” and said a light had been extinguished in the town centre today with news of his passing
