The new President of NUI Galway believes graduates should give back to their universities, to help fund the education of current third-level students.

Ciarán Ó’hÓgartaigh told the Irish Independent that there was a great tradition of past students gifting contributions to their universities in north America, and he wants to see a culture of alumni supporting the current generation of students and the university, which needs their help.

The new President acknowledged that the ordinary taxpayer is already contributing to the education system, but is calling on graduates to give smaller donations if they have the means, or people who have done well and have the capacity to give on a large scale.

Professor O’hOgartaigh said current university funding is insufficient by international norms, and while more Government investment is needed, we says we need to find ways in society to invest more in universities.
