The journey of the former International Rosary Priest, Fr Patrick Peyton, towards Sainthood is progressing.
The late priest from Attymass, outside Ballina, was made venerable by Pope Frances at the end of last year (2017).
The extensive process in becoming a Saint is continuing in Rome, and over the past number of days, it has emerged that Rome now hopes to exhume his body.
The Holy Cross priest was buried in Boston College in 1992, and he is likely to be reinterred at the Order’s Headquarters in Easton New York.
Members of his family must give permission for the exhumation, which is part of the process in anyone becoming a Saint.
When Fr Peyton was made venerable last November, the news was widely welcomed in his home parish of Attymass and at the Fr Peyton centre that has been established in the village in his honour.
It is hoped that with the anticipated visit of the Pope to Ireland later this year, that his Holiness may have further news on the Mayo priest’s beautification.
