A suspect was arrested on Thursday morning last at an address close to the town centre.

He was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and held for questioning.

The detention period was later extended to 24 hours by Chief Supt Pat Diskin, head of the Mayo Garda Division.

The suspect was charged in relation to a number of burglaries and remanded on station bail to appear at Castlebar District Court on February 21.

Gardai indicate that other burglarly charges against the suspect are expected to follow.

In the lead-up to the arrest Gardaí carried out intensive investigations.

This involved studying CCTV footage and 'Evofit' images compiled by victims.

Over a period of more than 16 months there has been a string of break-ins to homes in the Castlebar area, mostly under the cover of darkness.
