Up to fifty people are facing homelessness in Castlebar over the next number of months, as a single landlord has decided to sell his extensive rental properties and has issued tenants with the appropriate notice that they must leave.

The issue was raised by Independent Castlebar councillor Michael Kilcoyne at a recent Castlebar Municipal District meeting.

The councillor said the landlord was within his rights to sell up, but he said government policy, in not allowing Mayo county council to build social housing in the county town for seven years now, is to blame for the increasing fear of homelessness for many.
