A Mayo Fine Gael Senator has called for no cuts to be imposed on road maintenance funding in the North West, particularly given the extreme weather conditions faced this winter.

Senator John O’Mahony has asked the Minister for Transport Shane Ross to establish an emergency fund to ensure that harsh weather does not impact on road maintenance.

The Mayo Senator says that the allocation for road maintenance was cut by 18% this year, which in his view is an incorrect decision.

He said if current levels of maintenance funding are not increased, there is a prospect of sharp deterioration in the condition of the roads and therefore the capital value of the national roads network.
