The Communications Minister says the national broadband plan will now be rolled out quicker than planned, following the decision by Eir to withdraw its contract bid.

The State’s largest telecoms group pulled out yesterday, just months before work is scheduled to begin on the State-subsidised scheme, which aims to bring high-speed broadband to 542,000 homes and businesses in mostly rural areas of the country.

The consortium led by SSE and Enet is now the only bidder, but Minister Naughten told Midwest News that this will mean the scheme will be delivered quicker, and at no extra cost to the taxpayer.
